Automation Engineer Intern

Gerdau Long Steel

During my internship with Gerdau, I worked in the melt shop supporting industrial automation and equipment monitoring systems used throughout steel production. I collaborated with process engineers and technicians to troubleshoot and develop solutions for production needs.

One of my main projects involved developing Human-Machine Interfaces to display furnace burner back pressure and flow conditions in real time, helping operators identify abnormal behavior. I also supported the integration of a laser level sensor with a PLC for a pneumatic sand hopper refill system, implementing signal scaling logic and functional testing.

I developed a Python script that converted raw JetBOx burner data exports into weekly trend tables. Making it easier to compare operating conditions across stages, identify abnormal behavior, and establish thresholds for warning and fault alarms.

Electric Vehicle Motor Controller (VESC)

Assembled and modified a high-power BLDC motor controller for electric vehicle applications, integrating STM32-based field-oriented control, high-current power electronics, and communication interfaces. Designed a custom PCB for BLE connectivity and improved ADC signal filtering to reduce input noise and unintended motor behavior.

Autonomous Wireless Sensor Node

A solar powered wireless sensor node designed for long-term environmental monitoring and unattended operation. An ATmega328P regulates a boost converter through closed-loop feedback to charge a 9V battery, while a thermistor measures temperature and data is transmitted wirelessly via Bluetooth. The converter achieved a peak efficiency of 86% across varying loads, while a low-power sleep mode extends battery runtime beyond five days when solar power is unavailable.

Touchscreen EV Telemetry Display

A touchscreen dashboard for a VESC motor controller and an ANT battery management system, built on an ESP32-S3 display board and connected over Bluetooth Low Energy.

Electrocardiograph System

Designed and validated a real-time ECG acquisition system combining instrumentation amplification and multi-stage analog filtering to amplify cardiac biopotentials while rejecting common-mode and 60 Hz interference.
